OBITUARY - MARY ELLEN SMITH MARTIN - MAY 16, 1952

          Mary Ellen Smith, known to her friends as "Nellie," was born January 21, 1877, on a farm north of Oelwein, the daughter of Samuel and Hannah Park Smith. December 25, 1898, she married Floyd H. Martin.
          They had two sons: Beryl E. Martin, Superintendant of Schools, Plover, Iowa; and Hugh A. Martin, Chief of Training Disabled Veterans for the state of Washington.
          Mrs. Martin spent all of her life in Oelwein with the exception of twelve years in Minnesota and four years in Fayette. She died Friday, May 16, at her home.
          Besides her two sons, she is survived by her husband, two grandsons and one granddaughter. Two brothers, Thomas Smith and Richard Smith, Sr., and one sister, Mrs. Sarah Huntington, and nieces and nephews. Two sisters, Mrs. E. E. Day and Mrs. George Schneider preceded her in death.
