Notes on William J. Davis


From the Oelwein Register, January 1944:


          William Davis was born in Masonville, Iowa, on August 11, 1867. His parents were Daniel Davis and Charlotte Bruce Davis, who had moved to Masonville from Vermont.
          At the age of seven years, he moved to Fayette, Iowa, where he lived until he was 20, when he started farming. He continued to farm until 1918, and after he had ceased to farm, farming continued to be his chief interest.
          He managed the Oelwein produce for 12 years, retiring a year ago because of ill health. For some time he has been in failing health and the last few weeks was confined to bed. He died Saturday morning, Jan. 8, at his home at 117 1st N.E., Oelwein, Iowa, at the age of 76 years, four months and 27 days.
          He is survived by his wife, Gertrude Davis; two daughters, Mrs. Blanch Storms of Oelwein, Iowa, and Mrs. Muriel Burke of San Francisco, California; and one great grand-daughter, Barbara Ann Storms of Waterloo.
          Mr. Davis had three brothers and four sisters, all of whom preceded him in death, except Mrs. Charlotte Sweat of Piedmont, California.
          Funeral services were held at the Hintz funeral home on Monday, January 10, at 2 p.m. conducted by the Rev. L. W. Hauter, pastor of the Presbyterian church. Mrs. C. B. Hintz, accompanied by Mrs. L. E. Hilsabeck, sang two numbers. Burial at Otsego.
