Notes on George Andrew Jackson Schneider

From the 1973 "History of Oelwein, Iowa"

George Schneider

George Andrew Jackson Schneider was the fifth child born to Elizabeth Burch and Michael Schneider who were married August 23, 1855. (It was one of the first marriages to take place in Jefferson Township.)
George A. J. was born December 8, 1863, on a farm a mile and a half north of the present town of Oelwein. He was nine years old when Oelwein was first platted.
Before Oelwein was started he vividly recalled trips by wagon to Independence for groceries, McGregor for lumber, fire-wood and saw-logs from "Corn Hill" near Arlington and mail from Otsego. He remembered the moving of the postoffice to the present site of the Mealey Hotel and the big fire of 1887.
On March 15, 1887, he married Jane Smith (daughter of Samuel and Hanna (Parke) Smith). They had nine children. Of those, only two survive, Cecil R. Schneider and Dorothy (Mrs. Ben) Jenkins, both of Oelwein. The late Art Schneider, a well-known businessman was one of the children.
George A. J. Schneider died December 11, 1953, at the age of 90 years after spending his entire life in the vicinity of Jefferson Township and Oelwein.
From the Oelwein Register, December 1953.
