HOLROYD FAMILY
Mary Holroyd, daughter of William and Mary (Hansen) Holroyd was born 7 Nov 1815 in Leeds County Yorkshire England, and was married in Canada to Joseph Walton about 1877. Mary emigrated with her parents to Canada in 1820 and after the death of her father she moved to Genoa. In May 1877 she returned to Canada and came back again in 1892. Mary died 4 Jun 1900 age, 84y 7m 27d, and is buried in the Genoa Cemetery. Her obituary stated that her husband had died just a few weeks before in Peterboro, Canada. No children.
William Holroyd, son of William and Mary (Hansen) Holroyd was born 5 Sep 1819 in Leeds, England and died 1 Oct 1901. William was one year old when he came to Canada. He married Ann Hannah in 1871 in Canada, who was born in August 1831 and died 29 March 1912. Both are buried in the Genoa Cemetery. William's widow, Ann remarried in 1905 to Elias Hoag, who died 19 Oct 1918 at age 83 years. No children born to them. Ann Hannah had a brother William living in Bewdley, Ontario, Canada and a nephew, Fletcher Hannah of Genoa at the time of her death in 1912.
James A. Holroyd, was born in Canada in 1822 and died 15 Apr 1881 age 59 years in Genoa, Ill. He is buried in the Genoa Cemetery with his two wives. He married Mary Cardinal in January 1849 and she died 7 December 1849. He then married Adelia (Delia A.) Thurston on 3 July 1855. Adelia Thurston Holroyd married Lewis Hodge after James died and she died 4 Feb 1914 at age 76 years. James and Adelia Holroyd had the following children: Henry Herbert, born 29 March 1860, died 4 Jul 1912, married 20 Dec 1888 Frankie M. Hawkes, no children; Margaret, married Frank Drake, had six children: Warren, Alta m. Burt Pattee, Edna m. Will Abraham, Bertie died unmarried, Clara m. Burt Holly, and Daisy died unmarried: Grace B., married Ira B. Westover, {see Westover Family}; Herbert H., died young, unmarried, hit by train; James Albert, married Belle Thurlby, had one dau: Mrs. Myrtle Keefer; and William Guy, died 1 Nov 1912 age 44y 2m 6d, married Nellie, had two daus: Mary and Clara.
Stephen N. Holroyd, son of William and Mary (Hansen) Holroyd, died 28 May 1892 at the age of 82 years and is buried in Genoa Cemetery. No marriage record is recorded in DeKalb Co., Ill., but Genoa Cemetery records say that his second wife, Ann (Hartley) Holroyd is buried there, no dates are mentioned. According to census records, Stephen had two children by first wife: Mary Jane, born c. 1837 in Canada, married Robert Cliff, died 27 Jan 1896 at age 58y 8m and William A. who died 11 Nov 1845 at the age of 26 years. Stephen and Ann (Hartley) Holroyd had six children: Emma, born 9 Sep 1847 Joliet, Ill., died unmarried 13 March 1909; Maria, born c. 1849, died unmarried 8 Feb 1945 at age 95y 2m 25d; Charles Hartley; Letitia married J. B. Hancock; Mrs. S. Perkins; Ida, married S. P. Hancock; William; and Mrs. Cliff.
Eliza Holroyd, daughter of William and Mary (Hansen) Holroyd, married John Sackville and came to Genoa township to live with her mother and family. Children of John and Eliza (Holroyd) Sackville are: Frankie, died 7 weeks; Frances, died 8 weeks; Mary J.; John O.; Emily; Margaret; and William W.
Henry Holroyd was born 20 Sep 1825 at Peterborough, Ontario; died 2 March 1914 age 88 years in Genoa, Ill.. He served as an apprentice carpenter as a young man and on 5 Jun 1849 married Elizabeth (Brockenshire) Robbins in Port Hope, Ontario. She was born in Devonshire, England, 20 May 1830; died 13 Jan 1916 age 86 years in Genoa, Ill. Immediately following their marriage they moved to Genoa, Ill., to join Henry's brothers and sisters. Henry was a carpenter who helped build the first court house in Sycamore, and houses in Sycamore and Genoa. In 1862, they moved to a farm north of Genoa {former home of Stewart Hill}, and in 1876 moved to N. State St., and eventually built the home at 209 S. Sycamore St., in 1893. Between 1849 and 1877 Henry and Eliza had twelve children; Alonzo, born 9 June 1850, died 8 Jan 1919, married Sarah Jane Durham; Frank, a carpenter, married Rosalie Baldwin, lived 215 s Sycamore St., built Shurtleffs, Albert Lincoln's, and parents house; Elizabeth Virginia, born 25 May 1854, died 25 Apr 1912, married 1 Jan 1872 George W. Johnson, lived 410 W. Main St. (old H&R Block-Chamber Bldg.), one child, Nellie M.: Sophia E., buried Genoa Cem. 29 Jun 1933, died age 77y 1m 19d, married Hiram Shurtleff {See Shurtleff family}, lived 127 S. Stott St.; Allace B., died 18 Sep 1859 age 1 year; Albert Lincoln, died 11 Feb 1931, age 70y 3m 29d, married Susan Churchill, lived 235 S. Locust; Belle Alice, born 27 Feb 1864, died 15 March 1894, age 30y 18d, married Al Kuhn; Katie J., died 22 Jan 1874 age 8y 3m 15d; Blanche, died 16 March 1957, married Frank O. Holtgren {See Holtgren Family}; Fred, married Elizabeth (Lizzie) Brown {See Brown Family}, an engineer with Leich Electric Co., lived 101 W. 2nd St.; Maude H., died 26 Feb 1958 at age 86 years, married Nathaniel P. Thurber who died 21 Aug 1950 at age 77 years, lived in Beloit, Wisc.; and Jesse W., died 3 June 1881 age 3y 7m 24d.
Alonzo Holroyd, son of Henry and Elizabeth Holroyd, born 9 June 1850, died 8 Jan 1919, married Sarah Jane Durham, 14 Nov 1872. Alonzo (Lon) was a paper hanger and painter. This couple had three children: Kittie, married Mr. Schneider; Ursula, married Will H. Leonard {See Leonard Family}; and James Henry, died 6 Aug 1905.
Albert Lincoln (Linc) Holroyd, born 12 Oct 1860, died 11 Feb 1931 in Genoa, age 70y 3m 29d; and married Susan Churchill. He had a butcher shop, moved to Minnesota from 1908 to 1916, where he was a farmer, and returned and worked at Ira Douglas' grocery store until he retired. They lived at 235 S. Locust {Mark Saunders home}. This couple had six children: Belle Farrell: Harold (twin), married Esther Tyler, had son John who married Nancy Tischler and lives in California; Helen (twin), married Bryce Smith, had daughter Betty who married D. Martin Baker and lives in Naples, New York; Harry, married Ruth Austin, had three daughters and one son; Mary Puckett, Jean Gislason, Ann Magnuson, and Robert who married Ruth and lives in Genoa; Agnes, married Griffith Reid, had two daughters and one son; Frances Domenici, Helen Susan Newman, and Donald; Margery, married Elmer Prain {See Prain Family}, school teacher in Genoa area for many years, lives in Genoa.
