Notes on Samuel Day

Otsego Cemetery, Oelwein, Fayette County, Iowa
Otsego Cemetery Oelwein, Fayette County, Iowa
Final resting place for many of the area's earliest settlers.

Samuel Day and his wife Lucy Orr Day are buried in the Otsego Cemetery southeast of the town of Oelwein in Fayette County, Iowa. Their graves are marked by two small headstones marked "Father" and "Mother". The stones are next to the larger monuments of Samuel and Lucy's son, Seymour Wilson Day and his wife, Eliza Ann Hawkins Day.
Otsego Cemetery is a beautiful little prairie cemetery which predates the town of Oelwein. Samuel and Lucy had four children who are know to have grown to adulthood and married. (The only other child we know of was George Day who was seventeen years old on the 1850 census of St. Lawrence County, New York. Whether he died or chose not to move west with his family, we know nothing more about him.) Three of their children are also buried in Otsego Cemetery; Betsy Miranda Kenniston Sprague Day, Seymour Wilson Day, whose farm was less than a mile away, and John Bliss Day. Their other son, Hollis Samuel Day, is buried at Grandview Cemetery, south of the town of Fayette, which is about twenty miles north of Oelwein on highway 150. There are also several of Samuel and Lucy's grandchildren and great-grandchildren buried here. Although their descendants have spread to all parts of the country, there are still a good number of them living within an hour or two of Otsego Cemetery.
